All Hail the Zinc Lozenge [Jan. 12th, 2012|07:48 am]
Beemer
Well, I think that... worked.

So Tuesday, we had a very lovely birthday dinner for musikub at Amu, an upscale Japanese restaurant in Boulder. After we got home, I started to feel a bit of a cold coming on: I had some post-nasal drip and the start of a sore throat and the general feeling of mucus membranes in my sinuses being unhappy, you know how that is? One of those that I could tell was going to hit pretty hard and probably linger.

At bedtime, then, I decided to be sensible, and started sucking on a zinc lozenge. (Zinc gluconate glycine, that is, which is apparently the thing that has actual clinical evidence backing up its efficacy.)

And then I slept really poorly. I think I got one normal sleep cycle in, and after that for some reason I was AWAKE. I dinked around on the computer until about 5-ish before I felt tired again, and then went back to bed, but had to actually set an alarm (feh!) and get up because I had to be at a meeting at work at 10. So all told I think I got about 3 hours of sleep, bluh.

I kept sucking on zinc lozenges the whole time, by the way, so by the time I got to work yesterday, in addition to feeling all muzzy and melty-brained, I also felt just saturated with horrible zinc-y aftertaste.

Came home early, had chicken soup for dinner, was too low-energy to even attempt to accomplish anything productive, and went to bed at a thoroughly reasonable hour

And this morning I feel... fine. Maybe a tiny bit stuffy, but overall, yeah. I don't feel sick. So I'm gonna call that a success.

Zinc works. It's Science!

Actually, I take zinc when I travel to avoid nasty bugs. I have a friend who often travels (and often we travel together). She comes down with a bug every time she flies. The one time she didn't it was because I made her take zinc lozenges everyday.

Zinc does seem to with me, or at least shorten the length of illness. Though the taste is horrible

I've always assumed the horrible taste was part of its success. "If I get better, I can stop sucking on this chalk!"

Just be careful to follow the directions with zinc. Zinc toxicity is no fun. Neither is Anosmia.

There must have been something going around... just this evening I'm getting some of that same thing, my nose is already so congested that I can barely breath through it. Sadly, I have no zinc handy but I will heed your advice and try to get some as soon as I can.
