Van's, plans, and... (something ending in -ans that means 'indolence') [Jun. 3rd, 2013|07:46 pm]

Saturday was Van & Ron's annual people's fair brunch. Jerry was tied up with fu, so I went by my lonesome. It was good to see them, and we had some excellent conversation time. Van showed me a neat travel planning site called Rome to Rio, which suggests that the cheapest way to get to to Annecy may be to avoid Paris entirely, and to fly instead through Geneva. So now we're thinking that rather than doing big famous touristy things in Paris that have lines you wait in for hours, we might instead do our touristing poking around the countryside and little towns in the Alps.

Other than that, I did fuck-all this weekend. Just a lot of downtime, which was very good.

This morning I had the Big Important Meeting with our division directors where we discussed the Strategic Plan I was in charge of. (This was supposed to happen two weeks ago, but got postponed.) It went well. I was a little stumbly at first, until I got my brain in gear, but it went well and I got a lot of compliments. So hooray! I done good, it seems.

There's more stuff I need to catch up on, but that's it for recent (non-) happenings.

I've heard lovely things about Geneva, and they speak French there too. :)

Yeah, officially. Though Switzerdeutch isn't quite Deutsch. And Geneva's far from the Deutchsprache part of Suisse. :)

Yeah, exactly. Schweizerdeutsch is a very different critter. Schwaebisch was challenging enough, and that was a whole new set of foreign. Even having attuned my ear with Schwaebisch, I couldn't follow most of it.

But, yeah. I liked the bits of Switzerland I got to see, which was much more north than Geneva. I'm also this minute realizing that was 25 years ago, and well, that's horrifying in whole other way.

Geneva has the highest "cost of living" adjustment of the entire UN/WHO scale: base salary + 160%.

!

Makes me want to go to see what's so expensive!

At a guess? Geography. Mountains and lakes both make for lovely scenery, but make land for building on scarce...
