New couch for a new year! [Jan. 1st, 2014|05:36 pm]

We have a new couch!

We went to Ikea on Sunday and bought it. Ikea on a Sunday was busy, but not as crazy as people claim. (Also: lots of eye candy.) This may be because we were only buying, having done the shopping bit on a previous trip. I recommend splitting it into two pieces that way, because trying to decide what we wanted and get it would surely have been overtaxing.

We got an Ektorp couch with sticky-outy-loungey-bit. In thrilling beige, because that's what goes with the rest of the furniture and didn't cost a lot extra. It comes in two large 100-lb boxes, plus a small box for the cover that somebody in full service had to climb up to the fifth-level shelves to get. We brought the boxes home, whereupon they proceeded to live in the minivan for three days.

After ringing in the new year by staying home and not doing a damn thing last night, this morning we went off to Empress for dim sum with David and Gene, which was enjoyable as always. Then we came home and put the couch together.

It was less trouble than I was expecting; the Ikea wordless directions (which I am totally down with, given that the one worded notice in the boxes was printed in 31 different languages) were pretty clear, and the flat-pack engineering is clever. Really, the only reason it took us all afternoon is that we actually did wash and iron the cover, and that in order to have space to put the couch together, we had to completely rearrange the living room (and the dining room (and the library)). And clean up a bunch.

But now we have a comfortable new couch, hooray!

Also since my last post: stayed home Thursday, but still managed to get a good half-day's work in implementing the rival method that inspired my new method; it is not quite as good, and takes -- no exaggeration -- two full orders of magnitude longer to run. Would've stayed home Friday, also, but I had a meeting. Feh. Saturday night we played Star Wars with beplagued Jeff on skype and Special Guest Star: Thomas's Brother as a space mafia dude who helped them steal the Imperial general's new starship. And on Sunday we had Bob & Douglas over for dinner, which was lovely and delightful.

And maybe there was something else? But that's all I can remember at the moment.

And here I had imagined you buying two half-couches. In my mind a white modern minimalist half for Monkey and a plaid cushy chesterfield half for you - duct taped together. ;-)

Well done! I would totally buy that couch. My half, anyway.

I know a swedish lesbian who pointed out that every name at IKEA is actually a swedish word. "Ektorp" means "place."

How 'bout that! Now we know.

...And knowing is half the battle! (Yo Joe!)

We actually liked the Ektorp with lounge but never bought it because they never had it in stock when we were there. The couch we have now is from Big Lots, of all places, and looks like leather but is anything but. Very kid-friendly and priced so that if they destroy it, we won't freak out about replacing it when they're old enough to know better.
