LJ PSA: time for DW [Dec. 29th, 2016|11:54 am]
Beemer
For those who still occasionally use or have fond memories of LiveJournal:

It sounds like there's a non-zero chance that Russian political shenanigans are happening that could cause LJ to implode in the relatively near future. Details: http://siderea.livejournal.com/1330197.html

Even if you're never intending to post there again, I would encourage everybody who's still got an LJ account to import it to DreamWidth. It's a chunk of our collective shared history, and I think it would be a shame to lose it.

And, more importantly, you can do it easily and for free.
1) Go to DreamWidth and make a new free account: https://www.dreamwidth.org/create
2) Log in
3) Go to the Import Journal page, give it your LJ login info, and click the buttons:
https://www.dreamwidth.org/tools/importer

That's it!

Do your part to help out future historians. And give sentimental softies like me the ability to look back with fond nostalgia on our shared past by reading old entries. :)

Thanks for the heads up. Having an easy way to get all my entries out is nice as I wouldn't want to lose some of them.

LJ also has a backup tool, but it doesn't back up comments.

I do the ljbackup now and again, it's a pretty good tool. I'll have to look into dreamwidth though too.

Thank you! I do check in on my friends list every so often (although haven't updated my own in many years)... Such a shame to lose everything though. Thank you very much for the heads up!

I got here from a friend's link. Thanks for the news and links. I have a little-used DW account, but I've begun an import so that I have a backup of my LJ if things go down. I'll pass it on.

For all the "you can't unsay something on the Internet" sentiment, the web ecosystem hasn't done a good job of developing ways to preserve content in perpetuity.

In my recently morbid moods, I've been thinking about how to organize and pass on my digital detritus legacy in the event that I pass away. Not so long ago, LJ had seemed like a reasonable option for preserving the clever thoughts of my past.

Have you done this yourself? I'm just curious how long it took. I have over 13 years of entries to move.

And sadly, I have a permanent account here. I bought it right before FB took off and everyone jumped ship. Not my best timing, but I've enjoyed having the account.

Now I worry what will happen next with LJ.

I did! It took all of a couple minutes for the DW servers to copy everything over.
