Yesterday I got to do a usability test for Sun (some website stuff). They were looking for java programmers and it paid a little bit, so I volunteered. It was interesting; I've developed an amateur interest in usability, so I kind of knew what was going on, but I'd never encountered it except in the abstract before. It was interesting to see the difference between what I can do with no resources (ask friends, watch carefully and take notes) versus what they can do with a big usability lab with video cameras and one-way mirrors and so on. I don't know that the added sophistication makes a huge difference; I think what really matters is just looking at usability in the first place.
