Office Rock [Aug. 2nd, 2007|11:14 pm]
I realize that most people in bands are young. But I think it's about time for someone to start making office rock.

Love and sex and relationships are fine, fine subjects for a song. But we're not hurting for songs about heartbreak and longing and desire. There are plenty. Seriously.

What we don't have enough of are songs for people who are happily married to sing along to when crunching on a deadline, staying late to finish a project, or pondering an impending reorg.

The only one that springs to mind is Nothin', by Reel Big Fish, which has the chorus that goes: "And I don't f*ckin' care, and I don't f*ckin' care, and I don't f*ckin' care anymore." Cathartic, but not really an all-occasion kind of song...

(I played it a lot when I was in the final stages of thesis-writing.)

Really good rockers play rock full time, so don't really have office experience to draw on.

Up and coming rockers have jobs which allow them to play a gig at a bar on Tuesday night, so arriving in a cubicle at 8 the next morning is kind of challenging. There are some good punk songs about working retail, though...

People who work in cubicles and rock in their spare time usually (a) don't have the creative energy to write songs or (b) want to write songs that have nothing to do with their day job.

There are plenty of folk songs about work, but most of the ones that come to mind are blue-collar (working on railroads, in mines, with unions, etc.).

When I'm working late on a deadline, I usually listen to:
Chemical Brothers - Push the Button
U2 - How to Dismantle an Atomic Button
The Who - Who's Next
Prince - The Hits / The B Sides
Pure Disco 3-CD collection

Now that I think about it, next time I'm planning to stay late I should cue up Dark Side of the Moon (with songs titled Running, Time, Money, and Any Colour You Like it's a good fit for "THIS PROJECT MUST BE DONE NOW AND MUST BE DONE EXACTLY RIGHT!!!!%@#%@%").
