Writers Guild

Things I learned today:

1) Guiding Light is the world's longest-running soap opera. It started off as a radio broadcast in 1937 and recently had its 15,000th televised episode. Wow!

2) Having dithered on far too many occasions over whether or not there should be an apostrophe in names like "Writers Guild" (is it a guild for writers, or does it belong to writers?), I finally found a really useful discussion of possessive vs attributive nouns.

The short answer: historical usage trumps, of course, but if it's a proper name (Thieves Guild, Users Meeting, Diners Club) the Chicago Manual of Style suggests declaring it attributive and omitting the apostrophe. (Which looks better anyway.)

Word count 33117 today, which may be far enough along for me to publicly admit that I'm writing a novel/book kind of something. But I'm not convinced yet.
