Level up: retrain 4e to SAS [Jun. 29th, 2010|11:34 pm]

I've been intending for a while to post about how I'm kind of over 4e D&D, because of the huge crunch differential between combat and non-combat subsystems, which doesn't match well with our gaming group and the kind of games that I, as a wacko-niche cleverness-driven narrativist like to play, and relatedly how I had a conversation with Neal about the motivation behind the design of 4e -- I think it's likely that Wizards felt that 3e and 3.5e had saturated the market of established tabletop gamers, and wanted to expand into MMO players who have NOT played tabletop, which is why 4e is aimed at novice GMs as much as (or more than) it is at novice players -- and about the fact that while it was doing what it intended to do well, that wasn't really my bag.

And then in our Eberron game on Friday we decided to switch systems and try Tri-Stat dX, instead.

So yeah. Like that.

(I am enthused about this switch. I can't really figure out how to make the Aura special effect do what I think it ought to do, but otherwise I've been able to rebuild Valder to be the character I always thought of him as. Which is not really surprising, since I kind of always imagined him at least a little bit in superhero terms -- with origin story and everything -- and since we're at paragon tier now, we decided dX would be d10, making generic Tri-Stat identical to Silver Age Sentinels.)
