Milestones and Dinners [Oct. 21st, 2014|08:24 am]

This weekend we celebrated my grandmother's 100th birthday. She was born in 1914, which, if you think about it, was really quite a long time ago in terms of stuff that has changed between then and now. We just had a modest gathering of family in the basement of her church Saturday afternoon, but a couple of my siblings flew in for it, and my Mom drove down from elk camp (good to see her) and various cousins came in from out of town, so it was a good showing. And everyone was very welcoming to Jerry, which makes me happy.

That evening, we went dinner at Bonefish Grill to celebrate Rose's 40th birthday. The food was tasty, and the only real complaint I have is that it was very, very dim. It was so bad that we had to use phones as flashlights and pull the little LED-candles out of their cups to read the menus! I think it was partly because they put several smaller tables together for our party, which moved us out of position relative to the normal lighting, but still -- ain't nobody needs THAT much ambiance. But we had a good time and stayed quite late.

Sunday was a bit of a bust. We had a nice low-key morning and I was planning to do grocery shopping and work on prepping Star Wars while Jerry went off to the Eagle, but the effect of trying to eat right by having a light lunch was that I started to develop a nasty low-blood-sugar headache in the afternoon, and even though I went to a soup-and-salad place for dinner at 5, it still killed all my mojo for the next several hours, so I didn't get anything done. Meanwhile, poor Monkey had a couple too many drinks and fell into a depressive tailspin, but happily by the point he sent me a message to come rescue him I was totally able to play knight in shining armor. It left him (and to some extent me) all wrung out, but it was some needed catharsis, so probably a good thing overall. But yeah, not so much on the "productive day" scale.

Yesterday I left work early (after lots of tussling with paperwork for hiring a new student assistant minion) and we went to Matt & Jason's, where they fed us tasty home-cooked Italian for dinner and we spent several hours just socializing casually. They had an all-'80s music channel playing, and it's amazing to me how many of the songs from that era bring back very specific memories of time and place.

We have good friends and family, and life is good, is what I'm saying.
