Regarding time and incorrect choices [Dec. 15th, 2014|02:45 pm]

OTHER SCIENTIST: "The Mumble-mumble Network will help with the coverage problem going forward, although it doesn't do anything for the historical record."

ME: "Somebody really needs to invent a weather station that can collect data backwards in time."

OS: "If we had that technology, I don't think weather data would be the first thing it would be used for."

ME: "That's true. If I had a time machine, the first thing I'd do would be to go back to the International Meridian Conference of 1884 and convince them that zero longitude goes in the middle of the Pacific, not in Greenwich..."

Also, dear every calendaring program in existence:

If I put an event on my calendar that's defined with respect to a different time zone than the one I'm in, it is exceedingly rare that I want it displayed in its local time equivalent. Especially if I'm printing it out. Generally, the reason I'm adding an event that happens in Pacific Time? Is because I am going to California for that event, at which point having it in Mountain Time becomes negatively useful.

I get the reasoning for why you decided to do it that way, and I could even be persuaded that it's totally impractical to do it any differently, but it's still wrong.
