New Who & Big Bang [Aug. 25th, 2008|10:24 pm]

We finished Doctor Who season 1 today. Woo! The season finale was a bit melodramatic and deus ex machinesque, but I still enjoyed it. And now I have the theme from Big Brother stuck in my head, not that I'm really complaining.

I have also been enjoying The Big Bang Theory, which Reid & Richard gave me copies of on my trip to Utah. It's strange how short a half hour TV episode can be once you remove all the commercial breaks.

Huh. I've watched a couple episodes of the Big Bang Theory, and it hasn't clicked with me at all. How I Met Your Mother, on the other hand, I adore. Alas, HIMYM does not do nearly as well in the ratings as Big Bang. Such is the fate of, well, pretty much all shows I like.

I think part of the charm of BBT is watching them flesh out the characters, so it may do better watched in sequence.

I've heard lots of good things about HIMYM. Makes me almost wish I had Tivo...

We are SO hooked on the "new" Dr. Who. We DVRed and watched everything that was on this year. And now we want them all.

We just got (from NetFlix) "The Beginning", from the original season 1 -- from 1963! It's interesting to see how much television has changed. The acting is not so great, and relies heavily on exposition and melodrama. Each 1/2 hour episode is mostly just a part of a serial -- nothing is really resolved at the end of the episode. It looks like it may take the 7 episode season to finish the plot concerning one visit to one planet. Dr. Who is an old man, and is travelling with his granddaughter (!), as well as an Earth couple who forced their way onto the Tardis (and soon regret that idea).

I found Big Bang Theory unwatchable. It seemed to me to be a show about geeks written by people who don't actually know any. I'll second the vote for How I Met Your Mother, though.

BBT has a smattering of "geek interests are inherently funny" jokes that I find fairly tedious, but I've let them pass because most of the focus is on character interaction humor, and they do that well enough to make me laugh.

HIMYM recommendations reaching critical mass. Time to update the Netflix queue!
