Ah-ooo, werewolves of London [Oct. 19th, 2008|05:57 pm]
Not posting much because I've been writing fiction. It's weirdly hard to do both.

I watched An American Werewolf In London this weekend.

This is a movie that scared the pants off me when I saw part of it on network TV (so a censored version, even!) as a kid. I'm very susceptible to all the tricks filmmakers use to build suspense and scare you. And it was way, WAY too scary for me when I was, what, 10?

But it was listed as a favorite and a big influence by Them Guys What Make Those Films I Really Like, so I said what the hell, and decided to give it a try. And guess what? It's great!

What an entertaining movie! It's dark and tragic and gross and bloody and horrifying, but it's also REALLY FUNNY! Which, y'know, John Landis, go figure, right? But it was just... a lot more fun than I expected. I very much enjoyed it and would recommend it if you haven't seen it.

I feel like I've been made into a better movie-watcher.

My Dad, for some ungodly reason, took me to see this in the theater when I was 11 and had just recently stopped having my 'scare the shit out of everyone in the house by screaming my head off in the middle of the night' nightmares. I made it though the home invasion dream sequence before I left the theater and went into the one showing Empire Strikes Back. It took me another 5 years to finally watch it.

But, you're right. It's brilliantly funny and dark and sweet and sad. I list it among my favorite horror movies.

If you've not seen it American Werewolf in Paris isn't bad either. It definitely lacks the quirkiness and enthusiasm of 'London' but it's worth the watch.
