Galactic Twilight [Dec. 6th, 2008|12:48 pm]
We went over to Chris's last night to keep him company while Rose was out with a bunch of friends seeing Twilight. We played RftG and then Galaxy Trucker; Jerry & I were doing so badly in the last round that we cheated horribly and docked our busted-up ships together to form one big ship and pooled all our money. We still lost.

Anyway, speaking of, since I have not read the Twilight books but have nevertheless derived amusement from them, I thought I would point y'all who may be interested toward cleolinda Jones's Twilight recaps. She snarks very entertainingly about them, because, as she puts it:
"I enjoyed the first book--and hated the second--more than I expected. The third one just made me scream. And yet I am hopelessly addicted to them."

I've only read the first one, but I found it to be highly readable -- easy and enjoyable prose style. I don't feel the need to run out and see the film, but I will probably check out the next book at some point.

It's interesting -- I've run into multiple critiques of the book that address the "hidden" messages on sexuality directed at teens: consumating your love = death, young women should fear their own sexuality, etc. But when I read it, all I thought was, "This is a lot like a Jane Austen novel. Everybody's lusting and pining but not doing a whole lot about it. It's porn for teenage virgins."
