Strong wind blows [Feb. 17th, 2009|11:29 pm]
Beemer
It's really windy where I work. Like, really windy.

Windy enough that it broke one of the windows on the car today.

Thanks, atmosphere. You're a jerk.

Um, technically you're a stalker, dear. You're always watching what it does, attempting to predict movement, watching when it's hot or cold, etc. From that light, you're downright creepy, so I don't blame it for smashing the window on the van.

Cute, but still a creepy stalker.

My high school was near Broadway and Table Mesa, so we used to get some significant winds. One day the intercom announced "Will the person whose car has license plate ABC-123 please come to the office." A semi trailer (full of bikes and bike parts, if I recall) had blown over on top of their car.

So at least you've got it better off than that kid.

I kept checking the weather yesterday and couldn't understand why there were no high wind warnings. This winter feels like it's exceptionally windy and dry.

I saw two "High Winds Likely" signs between Denver and Ft. Collins last night.

Oh, I wasn't in the car when it happened. It was in the parking lot at work.

Is this just from pressure differences, or was there some debris?

Looking at yesterday's stats for the airport, gusts to 44 mph don't seem that bad, but I'm guessing you work in some sort of localized wind tunnel, with a funnelling effect from surrounding terrain.

Only having visited Banff once, I just don't get mountains. I can imagine plains, steppes, rolling countryside, great lakes, small lakes and tundra, either from seeing them or extending from local analogies. Even deserts make some sense but mountains just don't resolve beyond the theoretical for me.

Here's hoping you aren't an airplane pilot.

Not sure, but I think there had to be debris, probably gravel. It was only gusting to 60 mph or thereabouts.

I work right up against the foothills. I'll have to see if I can find a good picture for you...

The wind took out two trees at Riverside yesterday, too. Even dead people can't get a break.
