Stress you can avoid [Jan. 25th, 2010|09:17 pm]

So here is my new International Travel Tip.

Japan has squat toilets in some places. They're just troughs in the floor, basically, and they're kinda freaky and weird, and it is perfectly reasonable to decide that they are outside your comfort zone and that you will avoid them in favor of Western-style toilets.

But.

You should still seek one out and give it a go when there's no particular urgency and you can take the time to figure out the logistics of using one.

Because that way, when the situation is urgent, and that turns out to be the only available option?

Yeah. You'll be glad you did. (I certainly wished I had.)

They tell me that the Asian style toilets are the most healthy way of going. I'm not prepared to be healthy. We saw this style toilet in several places on our visit to Russia. I understand what you are saying but It would have to be terribly urgent.

A friend once took us for an overnight trip to an old hippy commune in Humboldt County California. The house was 5 bedrooms with a path. At the end of the path was the American version of an Asian toilet in the guise of an outhouse. I practiced Constipation for the rest of the trip.

I saw them but not very many of them so it didn't coincide with number two. I was intrigued though. Just to say I did.

I almost had this experience last week, too. Indian bathrooms were, um, challenging. Sorry you weren't fully prepared.

Is it weird I've always wanted to try one of those? I don't care. I've always wanted to try one of those!

Those are excellent! Much easier/cleaner to use, once you know how.

You do know we've ripped out one of our standard western-style toilets to install a squat toilet in the master bath, right? It's awesome. Your knees quickly get used to it.

It's only cleaner if you don't wind up doing something stupid like losing your balance or letting your shoelace get wet.
