New laptop is very close to usable. I've got everything installed now, I think. And files transferred, I think. Now it's just mostly a matter of getting things all put away. And figuring out if weird new Win 7 things are things I should/must adapt to, or if I can revert to old UI via setting tweaks...

As a former vehement anti-Windows 7'er, I would recommend diving into Windows 7 "as is". This version continues the pattern of 98-good, ME-bad, XP-good, Vista-bad, 7-good.

The only major changes I've done are lowering the User Account Control settings to not dim the screen every time it asks a security question, going back and re-installing some software as Administrator rather than as a user, and changing certain programs to always 'Run as administrator' under compatibility settings (on the exe file, not the icon).

Generally more security is good, but base settings are slightly over-zealous.

Good luck!
