Collectivizing [Apr. 1st, 2005|11:10 am]
Beemer
This morning as I drove around the 287 onramp loop, I saw all the prarie dogs standing up on top of their mounds being vigilant. Kawaii! I would have taken a picture, but what with the driving and all, I figured it was better instead to not lose control and go tumbling off the road to fiery doom.

So in honor of the prarie dogs and today being the first day of April, I give you:

Some of My Favorite Collective Names for Various Critters

We have:
a coterie of prarie dogs
a shrewdness of apes
a tower of giraffes
a bask of crocodiles
a smack of jellyfish
an ambush of tigers

and, apparently, bears come in triads these days...
Who knew?

I thought it was a parliament of rooks? (Not to say that owls are not also into the funk of George Clinton and his P-funk All Stars!)

You can check it out yourself on the Intarweb. However, the owls have been kind enough to share their collective noun with the much maligned rook.

Here are a few more:

a lamentation of swans
a conspirancy of ravens
a storytelling of ravens
a huddle of penguins
an ascension of larks
a deceit of lapwings

A skulk of foxes is one of my favorites.
And in my office we've taken to referring to a bicker of architects.

and, apparently, bears come in triads these days...
Well, you know... as they taught in kindergarten, it's not polite to take it out unless you're prepared to share.
